Genshin Impact Top Up Guide: What's Actually Worth Buying

Not every Genshin purchase is worth the same. The gap between the best-value option and the worst is roughly tenfold per dollar, and most players work that out only after they've already spent money the inefficient way.

This guide ranks what's actually worth buying, shows the maths behind each option, and lays out what a small, medium or larger monthly budget realistically gets you.

The Value Order: What to Buy First

The common mistake is starting at the bottom of that list. Someone who wants a character now buys a large crystal pack, when the same money spread across the Welkin Moon and unclaimed first-purchase bonuses would have produced substantially more.

Is the Welkin Moon Worth It?

Yes — and it isn't close. The Blessing of the Welkin Moon costs the same as the small crystal pack, but pays out in two parts: a chunk of Genesis Crystals the moment you buy it, plus 90 Primogems every day for 30 days when you log in.

Run the comparison. That small crystal pack on its own gives you its face value once. The Welkin Moon gives you the same upfront amount, then adds 2,700 Primogems across the month. For identical money you end up with roughly ten times the currency.

The one condition

You have to log in to collect the daily Primogems — they don't accumulate on their own. Miss a week and you've thrown away a quarter of what you paid for. If you play most days it's the easiest decision in the game. If you log in twice a month, it stops being a bargain.

Timing it

Buying multiple Welkins stacks the duration rather than the daily rate — you get more days, not more per day. So there's no advantage to buying several at once beyond convenience. Start it now rather than waiting for a banner: 30 days of Primogems is worth more than perfect timing.

The First-Purchase Bonus: Free Money You Can Only Claim Once

Every Genesis Crystal tier doubles its output the first time you buy it. Not the first purchase overall — the first purchase of each individual tier. Six tiers means six separate doubling opportunities.

This changes how you should sequence spending. If you plan to spend a fixed amount over the next few months, buying each tier once before repeating any of them gives you far more crystals than putting the same money into repeat purchases of one tier.

Two things worth knowing:

• The bonus is tracked by HoYoverse against your account, not against where you bought it. It applies the same whether you purchase in-game or through a top-up platform.
• It doesn't expire. If you haven't touched the larger tiers yet, those doublings are still sitting there waiting.

Is the Battle Pass Worth It?

The Gnostic Hymn is the paid Battle Pass track for the current version. It's good value, but conditional in a way the Welkin Moon isn't.

You get Primogems, Intertwined Fates, a 4-star weapon of your choice, plus Mora, EXP books and weapon ascension materials. Counting the Fates as currency, the total return comfortably beats buying crystals directly — but only if you finish the track.

Buy it if

• You play several times a week through the whole patch cycle
• You clear weekly bosses and do your daily commissions regularly
• You're short on Mora or weapon materials, which most mid-game accounts are

Skip it if

• You log in sporadically — an unfinished pass is wasted money
• There's under a week left in the current version
• You already have the weapons on offer and don't need materials

One practical note: the pass unlocks retroactively. Levels you earned before buying still count, so there's no penalty for buying it partway through a patch — just make sure enough time remains to finish.

What Your Budget Actually Gets You

Welkin only

The single most efficient way to spend on Genshin. Combined with free-to-play income from events, quests and Spiral Abyss, a running Welkin puts most players within reach of one limited character per patch cycle. For a lot of accounts this is genuinely all you need.

Welkin plus Battle Pass

The standard setup for regular players. You get steady Primogems, a reliable Fate income, and the Mora and materials to actually build what you pull — which matters more than most people expect. Pulling a character you can't level is a common and frustrating trap.

Once the two subscriptions are running, extra crystals are how you guarantee a specific banner. Work down the unclaimed first-purchase bonuses before repeating any tier — that's where the remaining efficiency is. Beyond that you're paying base rate, and the honest advice is to buy only what you need for the banner in front of you rather than stockpiling.

Four Ways People Waste Money

• Buying crystals before the Welkin Moon. The most expensive mistake in the game, and the most common. Sort the subscription first.
• Repeating one tier while other tiers still have unclaimed doubles. Same money, roughly half the crystals.
• Pulling without the resources to build. A 5-star at level 1 does nothing. Materials and Mora are part of the cost of a character, not an afterthought.
• Chasing a 50/50 loss with an unplanned top-up. Losing the coin flip is a design feature, not bad luck. Deciding your ceiling before you start is what keeps that moment from getting expensive.

Is the Welkin Moon better than buying crystals?

By a large margin, provided you log in most days. The same money produces roughly ten times the currency because the daily Primogems accumulate over 30 days rather than arriving all at once.

Do multiple Welkin Moons stack?

They extend the duration, not the daily amount. Buying several at once just means more days, so there's no efficiency gain beyond not having to remember to renew.

Does the first-purchase bonus reset?
